To know your friends and whānau is to know the books they hold dearest...

It started with a yarn

like all good things do

Over a glass (or three) of Pinot, a friend was telling me about a book that had changed his life. And it hit me—books change people’s lives all the time, usually for the better. I also realised just how often I talk about books.

So the idea was born: what if I read the books that changed other people’s lives? Maybe it would deepen our connection. Maybe I’d understand them better—or at least get a glimpse of what keeps them turning pages in this weird, wonderful, and time-starved life.

There’s another layer to this project too. I’ve always felt a bit sad at the end of a great book, knowing I’ll never have enough time to read all the ones I want to. This gives my reading a bit more direction. It stretches me, introduces new subjects, and maybe even takes the edge off that little existential crisis I get every time I turn the final page.
